i think the horrors of disability are not just what the disabled people endure, it also reminds "normal" people of how non normal they actually are, serves as a mirror to look at themselves as see how existentially confusing we are. like when we see someone without a hand, a part of our minds is alarmed by how strange it looks, and on a deeper level reminds us of how weird existence is. how absurd it is. how we don't know, and reminds us of our own mortality, fragility and confusion of reality. tucked away. loss of control. when someone see someone else who is radically different and deformed, it is a mirror for them.
