listeners who have followed an artist's work for years understand the path that has been carved.
they are housed in the context of the past
where previous works consolidates identity and gives evidence of aptitude.
such a context creates a bedrock of understanding.
new material is safer with them
vs. those who haven't heard any of the previous works before. they understand where the one is coming from. my worst fear is to be misunderstood.
If a new person comes across one of my materials, and they think it's noise, that material will act like a microcosm to what my identity really is. if i play some experimental eccentric material, they may think that that is all that i do, when in reality that's a small piece of a larger context. it's a bit of a problem because how does one communicate this?
