more hidden textures on the guitar.

learned this from guthrie govan

to pick or finger pick 12 frets higher than the fretted note.

similar to artificial harmonics

where i hover my right hand 12 frets above the fretted note

but instead of hovering over

i pick on the fret line.

if i fret a note on the 2nd fret:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |---2------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

i will pick on the 14th fret (12 frets higher) same string.

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |---2<p14>-------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

in this context, <p14> means to pick on the 14th fret line.

gives a more rounded sound.

more rounded and glass-like.

resonant.

oboe sound.

apply this to chords now.

add9 shape:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |---6------------------------|
D |---4------------------------|
A |---2------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

pick normally with this chord:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |---------6-----------6------|
D |------4-----4-----4-----4---|
A |---2-----------2------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

now pick twelve frets higher for each note:

E |----------------------------------------------------------------|
B |----------------------------------------------------------------|
G |----------------6<p18>---------------------6<p18>---------------|
D |---------4<p16>--------4<p16>--------4<p16>-------4<p16>--------|
A |---2<p14>---------------------2<p14>----------------------------|
E |----------------------------------------------------------------|
B |----------------------------------------------------------------|
F#|----------------------------------------------------------------|

glass-like

harp-like

notes:

experiment with both picking, and also finger-plucking 12 frets higher.

slow playing is better than fast.

listen to the iridescence of each note.
