actually

all hammer-ons from nowhere.

no pull-offs.

no picking.

all fingers only do hammer-ons.

index finger hammer:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |-h4-------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

middle finger hammer:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |-----h5---------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

3rd finger hammer:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |---------h6-----------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

4th finger hammer:

E |----------------------------|
B |-------------h7-------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

if necessary, i can mute the surrounding strings

lightly touching surrounding strings with my right hand fingers.

i need to hammer as hard as i can

until it becomes effortless

now practice all 4 fingers:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------h7----------------|
G |-------h6-------------------|
D |----h5----------------------|
A |-h4-------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

and backwards:

E |----------------------------|
B |-h7-------------------------|
G |----h6----------------------|
D |-------h5-------------------|
A |----------h4----------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

forward and backward:

E |-------------------------------|
B |----------h7----------------h7-|
G |-------h6----h6----------h6----|
D |----h5----------h5----h5-------|
A |-h4----------------h4----------|
E |-------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------|
F#|-------------------------------|

randomization:

E |-------------------------------|
B |----------h7----------------h7-|
G |----h6----------h6-------h6----|
D |-------h5----h5-------h5-------|
A |-h4----------------h4----------|
E |-------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------|
F#|-------------------------------|

each finger feels like a hammer.

i must hammer as hard as i can until it is effortless.

replace the pull-off with a "hammer-off".

replace conventional legato.

allan holdsworth said he likes this approach better because it has uniform sound.

it is "real" legato.

make sure each note is long as possible.

not staccato

nice and full

like playing the piano or marimba.

feels good on the fingers.

plush touch response.

each note consistent and tactile.

beautiful attacks and transients with scales:

allows for lateral movement across the fretboard.

allows for super wider intervallic ideas.

allows for string skipping with ease and efficiency.

all notes achieved with only the left hand.

minimal to no picking.

right hand functions soley to mute or palm mute strings.

play everything with only hammer-ons and hammer offs.

hammer-ons with two fingers on the same string:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |-h4-h5----------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

hammer-off:

E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |-h5-h4----------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

the hardest part is the hammer-off.

going up is easy. going down is hard.

it requires doing two things at once.

whereas pulloffs were one motion.

hammer-offs are two: hammer-off + hammer on.

ex: hammer-on 9th fret...followed by hammer-on 7th fret same string.

to do the 7th fret hammer-on, i need to first "hammer-off" the 9th fret.

scale fragments:

E |----------------------------|----------------||
B |----------------------------|----------------||
G |----------------------------|----------------||
D |----------h4----------------|----h4----------||
A |-h4-h5-h7----h7-h5-h4-h5----|-h7----h7-h5----||
E |----------------------------|----------------||
B |----------------------------|----------------||
F#|----------------------------|----------------||

intervallic movement:

E |-h17h12---------h12h17h12---|----------h12h17h12---------|
B |-------h15---h15------------|-h15---h15---------h15------|
G |----------h17---------------|----h17---------------h17---|
D |----------------------------|----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|----------------------------|

E |---h12h15h12---------h12----|
B |-h15--------h15---h15-------|
G |---------------h17----------|
D |----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

lateral movement:

E |-h12------------------------|----------h12---||
B |----h10---------------------|-------h10------||
G |-------h9-------------------|----h9----------||
D |----------h14---------------|-h14------------||
A |-------------h12------h12---|----------------||
E |----------------h10-10------|----------------||
B |----------------------------|----------------||
F#|----------------------------|----------------||

string skipping:

E |----------------------------|----------------||
B |----------------------------|----h13h15h20---||
G |----------h13h15h20---------|----------------||
D |----------------------------|----------------||
A |-h13h15h20---------h13h15---|-h20------------||
E |----------------------------|----------------||
B |----------------------------|----------------||
F#|----------------------------|----------------||

personal notes:

low action.

light string gauge.

holding the guitar up high.

picking can be used as good source of activation energy.

picking can be good for pivoting strings or moving directions.

the relationship between ring and small finger is the weakest.

this technique actually strengthens the entire hand.

the ability to play all other techniques more easily.

it doesn't change tone or intonation like pull-offs do.

combine this with palm muting for tactile feel and tone.

more to be explored and expanded upon.
