incredible strength exercise that has implications for all other techniques.

positive externalities.

if i can bar the entire fretboard with one finger

with all fingers

i am set.

start with 1 string:

E |---5------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

2 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |----------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

3 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |----------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

4 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |---5------------------------|
A |----------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

5 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |---5------------------------|
A |---5------------------------|
E |----------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

6 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |---5------------------------|
A |---5------------------------|
E |---5------------------------|
B |----------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

even harder with 7 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |---5------------------------|
A |---5------------------------|
E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
F#|----------------------------|

and 8 strings:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |---5------------------------|
A |---5------------------------|
E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
F#|---5------------------------|

do this with all 4 fingers.

index:

E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
G |---5------------------------|
D |---5------------------------|
A |---5------------------------|
E |---5------------------------|
B |---5------------------------|
F#|---5------------------------|

middle:

E |---6------------------------|
B |---6------------------------|
G |---6------------------------|
D |---6------------------------|
A |---6------------------------|
E |---6------------------------|
B |---6------------------------|
F#|---6------------------------|

ring:

E |---7------------------------|
B |---7------------------------|
G |---7------------------------|
D |---7------------------------|
A |---7------------------------|
E |---7------------------------|
B |---7------------------------|
F#|---7------------------------|

pinky:

E |---8------------------------|
B |---8------------------------|
G |---8------------------------|
D |---8------------------------|
A |---8------------------------|
E |---8------------------------|
B |---8------------------------|
F#|---8------------------------|

pinky is hardest.

barring the 1st fret all the way through is the hardest.

E |---1------------------------|
B |---1------------------------|
G |---1------------------------|
D |---1------------------------|
A |---1------------------------|
E |---1------------------------|
B |---1------------------------|
F#|---1------------------------|

the higher up the fretboard the easier.

pinky is hardest.

if i can achieve a clean bar across the fretboard with this my hand is super strong

and to have the stamina for it is important

to be able to keep holding it.

combine with with some right hand finger picking exercise for more efficient practice.

E |----------------------------5--------|
B |-----------------5-------5---------5-|
G |---------5------5------5--------5----|
D |-------5------5-----5--------5-------|
A |-----5------5-------------5----------|
E |---5---------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------------|
F#|-------------------------------------|

and combine with an open tuning for some beautiful musical phrasing.

E |----------------------------5--------|
A |-----------------5-------5---------5-|
G |---------5------5------5--------5----|
D |-------5------5-----5--------5-------|
A |-----5------5-------------5----------|
D |---5---------------------------------|
C |-------------------------------------|
F#|-------------------------------------|

notes:

practice this on an old acoustic guitar

make it as hard as possible.

some strings such as the g and b string will be blocked.

depends on the shape of each finger.

with the finger contour there may be different pressure points.

it's only a matter of time...
