one way to maximize progress is to do finger tapping patterns on a surface.

like on a desk.

or on a leg.

to treat the surface as a pseudo-fretboard.

great for building hand strength and coordination.

each finger is a number.

left hand first.

index - 1

middle - 2

ring - 3

pinky - 4

pattern 1: index + middle

surface |--1--2--1--2--1--2--1--2---|

pattern 2: index + ring

surface |--1--3--3--3--1--3--1--3---|

pattern 3: index + pinky

surface |--1--3--3--3--1--3--1--3---|

pattern 4: index + pinky

surface |--1--3--3--3--1--3--1--3---|

pattern 5: middle + ring

surface |--2--3--2--3--2--3--2--3---|

pattern 6: ring + pinky

surface |--3--4--3--4--3--4--3--4---|

basically, practice all combinations with your left hand fingers.

do it with 2 fingers

3 fingers

4 fingers

here are some 4-finger patterns:

pattern 1:

surface |--1--2--3--4--1--2--3--4---|

pattern 2:

surface |--1--3--2--4--1--3--2--4---|

pattern 3:

surface |--4--3--2--1--4--3--2--1---|

pattern 4:

surface |--4--2--3--1--4--2--3--1---|

figure out whatever permutations or patterns

ones that match whatever musical idea is being worked on

now try doing some "chord" like tapping maneuvers.

two fingers at a time.

all still with the left hand.

pattern 1:

surface |--3--4--3--4--3--4--3--4---|
surface |--1--2--1--2--1--2--1--2---|

pattern 2:

surface |--2--4--2--4--2--4--2--4---|
surface |--1--3--1--3--1--3--1--3---|

figure out whatever combinations necessary.

now do all the same exercises with the right hand. eg:

pattern 1 [loop]:

surface |--1--2--3--4--1--2--3--4---|

pattern 2 [loop]:

surface |--1--3--2--4--1--3--2--4---|

pattern 3 [loop]:

surface |--4--3--2--1--4--3--2--1---|

pattern 4 [loop]:

surface |--4--2--3--1--4--2--3--1---|

useful for practicing guitar tapping

because now we can combine both right hand left hand.

eg. both right and left hand index fingers alternate (loop)

surface (R) |-----1-----1-----1-----1---|
surface (L) |--1-----1-----1-----1------|

or left hand index taps and the right hand moves between fingers [loop]

surface (R) |-----1-----2-----3-----4---|
surface (L) |--1-----1-----1-----1------|

and then swap over:

surface (R) |-----1-----1-----1-----1---|
surface (L) |--1-----2-----3-----4------|

and then both hands mirror each other:

surface (R) |-----1-----2-----3-----4---|
surface (L) |--1-----2-----3-----4------|

and then both hands go in opposite motions:

surface (R) |-----4-----3-----2-----1---|
surface (L) |--1-----2-----3-----4------|

"chordal" tapping is also useful.

both right and left hand have fingers tapping at once

a mental exercise too.

ex 1 [loop]:

surface (R) |--3--4--3--4--3--4--3--4---|
surface (L) |--1--2--1--2--1--2--1--2---|

ex 2 [loop]:

surface (R) |--4--3--2--1--4--3--2--1---|
surface (L) |--1--2--3--4--1--2--3--4---|

there are hundreds of permutations and combinations.

explore all finges [loop]:

surface (R) |--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4---|
surface (R) |--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3---|
surface (R) |--2--2--2--2--2--2--2--2---|
surface (R) |--1--1--1--1--1--1--1--1---|
surface (L) |--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4---|
surface (L) |--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3---|
surface (L) |--2--2--2--2--2--2--2--2---|
surface (L) |--1--1--1--1--1--1--1--1---|

explore different fingers [loop]:

surface (R) |-----------------------4---|
surface (R) |--------------------3------|
surface (R) |-----------------2---------|
surface (R) |--------------1------------|
surface (L) |-----------4---------------|
surface (L) |--------3------------------|
surface (L) |-----2---------------------|
surface (L) |--1------------------------|

different number of fingers for each hand.

surface (R) |--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4---|
surface (R) |--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3---|
surface (R) |--2--2--2--2--2--2--2--2---|
surface (L) |--1--2--3--4--1--2--3--4---|

do some drum rudiments:

surface (R) |-----1----------1--------1---1---|
surface (L) |--1-----1----1-------1-----------|

i can make my own patterns based on the movement of any song i am working on.

anything to mimic the actual guitar exercise i am practicing

when i am away from the guitar.

notes:

i notice in myself that my index finger wants to shoot up every time i tap with my middle, ring and pinky fingers.

but i must keep all fingers down

great for all hammer on technique

or legato

or tapping

drummers do this.

great for building rhythmic awareness and prowess.
